How to check the soil, water the root area, and avoid rigid schedules that do not fit your garden.

There is no honest rule to water every garden every few days. Soil, rain, heat, wind, containers, crop size, and root depth all change how quickly water is used. Check the soil first, then decide.

Check below the dry surface

The top of the soil can look dry while the root area is still damp. Feel or inspect the soil below the surface. If it is starting to dry at the depth used by the roots, water thoroughly. If it is wet, wait and check drainage.

A wilted plant in dry soil may need water. A wilted plant in wet soil may have poor drainage, damaged roots, heat stress, or disease. Do not add water until you check.

Water the root area

A slow, thorough watering can reach deeper roots better than a quick daily splash. Let the water soak in instead of running away. Seedlings and shallow-rooted crops may need gentler, more frequent checks, so follow the crop page too.

Containers need closer attention

Container mix dries faster than garden soil. Check pots often during hot or windy weather. Water thoroughly when the mix begins to dry, and make sure extra water can leave. A pot with no drainage is not fixed by adding more water.

Keep moisture steadier

Large swings from very dry to very wet can stress plants. Mulch can slow evaporation and help the soil stay more even. Keep mulch loose and away from stems or crowns.

Use the plant and weather as clues

  • Check more often during heat, wind, and long dry periods.
  • Check containers and raised beds sooner than nearby ground soil.
  • Water less when rain has reached the root area.
  • Follow crop-specific changes, such as reducing water near harvest when the guide says to.

Crops with high drought tolerance
